MONT SAINT MICHEL and SAINT MALO, 2 DAYS TRIP

Day 1. PARIS/ MONT SAINT MICHEL/ SAINT MALO.
MONT SAINT MICHEL. The "Marvel of the Western World", as it's called nowadays, was an important centre of pilgrimage during the Middle-Ages and lived its greatest apogee in the 15th century. Visit of the abbey, its extraordinary situation and its remarkable architecture made of it the most splendid abbey in France. The Mont Saint Michel is a jutting rock of about 900 metres round and 80 metres high, covered by surprising constructions of Romanesque and Gothic style which were built during the 10th and 13th centuries. It is attached to the continent by a dyke built in 1877. According to a manuscript dating from the 10th century, Aubert, archbishop of Avranches, dreamed that Saint Michel archangel asked him to build a church on the top of the "mont Tombe". As soon as the church was built, the "mont Tombe" became "mont Saint Michel". During the Middle Ages, it was the most important pilgrimage place of the Christianity in France welcoming local, regional and European pilgrims who came there to pray the fighter against the Devil, the soldier of God.
The mont Saint Michel is surrounded by walls built in the 15th century, they give a particular aspect to the town and can be crossed during low tide. The abbey is formed by 2 superposed churches and monastic buildings. The Unesco has classified the mont Saint Michel as "World Heritage Site".
SAINT MALO. The surprising and famous "city of pirates" was built on a rocky area at the middle of calm beaches, and into ramparts that surround high buildings with inclined roofs and lofty belfries.
Saint Malo is one of the most fine fortified ensembles in France and a great crucible of celebrities: Jaques Cartier; explorer, Robert Surcouf; sailor, pirate and ship-owner, René Duguay-Trouin; pirate, François de Chateaubriand; writer, Félicité de Lamennais -writer and philosopher-, and so on. Its ramparts at the South face ship-owners' mansions built during the 18th century, which were destroyed during the Second World War and rebuilt in 1945. They are testimonies of the rich splendour obtained thanks to the maritime trade. During the visit, you will see the ramparts and the statues of some of its celebrities, the Quic-en-Croigne tower, the castle that is now the museum of Saint Malo's History, the National fort, the Saint Vincent cathedral with its stained-glasses and so on.
Overnight at the Hotel Cartier or Hotel Central or Hotel Oceania.

Day 2. SAINT MALO/ DINAN/ CHARTRES/ PARIS
DINAN. This old town is most atmospheric, crammed full of half timbered buildings dating from the 13th and 14th centuries, with cobbled rambling streets all carefully restored and preserved. Its history revolves around its feuds with England. Notably, the Duke of Lancaster’s invasion of 1357 when the local hero was Bertrand Du Guesclin whose brother Oliver, having been kidnapped, was held to ransom, by his captor an English Knight, one Cambridge.
CHARTRES. It is the capital of the Beauce, agricultural region. Since the ancient times, Chartres has been an important religious place, where the worship to the water was practised and where several activities linked to the Eure River were developed. The most important place to visit in Chartres is its Gothic cathedral which towers can be seen from miles away. At the middle of both belfries, the one to the south of Romanesque style and the other to the north of Gothic style, there is the 3 portals of the façade where all the statues represent the life of Jesus. Its interior is gradually illuminated by several colours created by the wonderful stain-glasses windows; some of them date from the 12th and 13th centuries. In its nave, there is the labyrinth; it is the best conserved in France. Ancient houses and narrow streets can be seen around the cathedral. Chartres, for its cathedral, is one of the most important pilgrimage cities in France.
PARIS. Arrival at the end of the day and end of our services.
