ESCAPE to CHAMPAGNE, 2 day trip

DAY 1. PARIS/ HAUTVILLERS/ EPERNAY/ AY/ FAUX DE VERZY/ VERZENAY/ RHEIMS
HAUTVILLERS is situated in the South versant of the mountain of Rheims. It's a lovely residential and vine-dresser city. It has kept its old dwellings with its arched portals decorated of wrought iron signs. The city is proud of having been part of the 3 best wine hillsides together with Ay and Avenay, as Louis XIV used to say.
EPERNAY, represents with Rheims the principal centre of the wine industry of Champagne. The city boasts of its green areas, wealthy blocks of flats of the 19th century that imitate the Renaissance and Classical style, and above of in the Champagne Avenue where are located most of the well-known cellars of champagne. AY. It's said that it was in Ay that Dom Perignon, cellarer of the Hauvillers abbey during 47 years, created the fabrication technique of the champagne wine. FAUX de VERZY, surprising town for his botanic environment: beech trees of knotted trunks that interlaced themselves in peculiar directions forming funny vaults and domes. VERZENAY produces wines of a good vintage which are reputed in the region. A windmill overhangs the town in front of a vineyard hill where is located a lighthouse. It was built by a business man to promote his production. It shields the Wine Museum where thanks to audiovisual, scenography and modern techniques you discover the steps of the birth of a famous wine.
RHEIMS. Arrival. Overnight at Hotel L'Assiette Champenoise.

DAY 2. RHEIMS/ PARIS
RHEIMS, city of Fine Arts; city of king coronations and now university city, is famous for his wonderful cathedral, the Tau Palace, the St Remi basilica and its famous champagne cellars. The city is demarcated by large boulevards dating from the 18th century. The old part of the town was destroyed at 80% during the 1st World War. Nowadays, the city has added spacious "faubourgs". The Notre-Dame Cathedral is one of the most important in the Christian world for its unit of Gothic style, for its statuary whole and for the souvenirs that it brings back. We can find in the renovated area the St Remi's basilica, which was built between the 11th and 12th centuries, together with the St Remi Museum. Many Rheims archbishops and the first kings of France were buried there. The Holy Ampoule is preserved there also.
