Day 1. NICE
NICE. Arrival. The rooms at the hotel are available since 3 PM. The capital of the Cote d'Azur faces the Mediterranean sea. Since its foundation by the Greeks, it has been a very important city. Romans left there numerous vestiges. It was an Italian city untill 1860, its constructions keep their architectural caracteristics of that country. Accomodation.
Day 2. NICE/ ST PAUL DE VENCE/ GRASSE/ AIX-EN-PROVENCE
ST PAUL DE VENCE. Surrounded by medieval walls, it is one of the most visited villages in France. GRASSE. It is the capital of perfumes since 1580 when a manufacturer of gloves, member of the royal court of Catherine de Medicis, began to perfume them. Possibility of visiting a perfume's factory. AIX-EN-PROVENCE. Important university city. The elegance of its buildings, the charm of its gardens and its fountains, as well as the harmony of its avenues make a pleasant impression on tourists. Breakfast and accommodation.
Day 3. AIX-EN-PROVENCE/ SISTERON/ GRENOBLE
SISTERON. Also named « the Door of the Provence », is located in a surprising place between the mountains and the Durance river and at the middle of the famous « Route de Napoleon ». GRENOBLE. The capital of the Dauphine region has a modern sight and is situated at the feet of the Alps. It was the city of the Olympic Games in 1968. We suggest a visit to the Bastille fortress, climbing by cable car, from where can be appreciated an exceptional panoramic view of the city and the mountains. Breakfast and accommodation.
Day 4. GRENOBLE/ LYON
LYON. Harmoniously situated between the Saone and Rhone rivers, it seems to hang above the hills of Fourvière and « Croix Rousse ». Along its 20 centuries of history, it has been an important focus of religion, industry, art and commerce. It is considered as the capital of French gastronomy. Breakfast and accommodation.
Day 5. LYON/ AVIGNON/ ARLES/ MARSEILLE
AVIGNON. Capital of Christianity in the XIV century, when 7 popes were French. To visit the city: the « Notre-Dame des Doms » cathedral, the Doms hill and its gardens, the famous bridge of Avignon and the Palace of the Popes. ARLES It still preserves many Roman vestiges. It was the city of the quarrel between Van Gogh and Gauguin. MARSEILLE. It is the oldest French city. To visit the old port protected by the fortress of St Jean and St Nicolas, and « Notre Dame de la Garde » basilica. Breakfast and accommodation.
Day 6. MARSEILLE/ CASSIS/ ST TROPEZ/ NICE
CASSIS. The light of this little port captivated many painters like Matisse and Dufy. We propose to make a cruise to « les Calanques » -narrow and steep creeks of rocky walls-. ST TROPEZ. Small port of fishers, it was launched by the painter Signac who used to invite often his post-impressionists friends. It is now a summer resort for the « jet-set » as well as celebrities of art, literature, cinema and « showbiz » of the whole world. NICE. Arrival at the hotel at the end of the day. Breakfast and accomodation.
