CHATEAUX COUNTRY- LOIRE CASTLES
2 days excursion
Day 1. PARIS/ BLOIS/ AZAY LE RIDEAU/ TOURS
CASTLE of BLOIS. Royal residence until Henry IV. With a mix of styles but with harmonised decoration. This castle knew tragic events as the murder of the Duc de Guise which was suspected to plot against Henry III. The State Hall, vestige room from the old feudal castle, is the most majestic Hall of the Val of the Loire.
AZAY LE RIDEAU CASTLE. According to Balzac, this residence, built on ruins, is the most feminine castle of the Loire region. The owner, Gilles Berthelot, a powerful business man, built it between 1518 and 1527. François I confiscated the castle and offered it to a friend, Antoine Raffin. Since that time several owners had been succeeded. In 1905, the castle became a property of the State. It looks like of medieval style but Azay has got a lot of offensive constructions and a poor decoration. The interior of the house is elegant with a selection of fine furniture, family portraits and tapestry.
TOURS. St Martin (316-397) was the first bishop of this Gallo-roman city. The king Louis XI (1423-1483) made it prosper thanks to the fabrication of arms and silk tissues. In spite of tragic events: bombardments by Prussians in 1870 and during the 2nd World War, Tours has ever recovered and has developed its economy. In the old part of the city is the Plumereau square with galleries, boutiques and bars. Not very far, it is the Saint Pierre le Puellier square where Gallo-roman ruins were discovered.
Accommodation in Chateau d'Artigny in Montbazon or de l'Univers Hotel in Tours
Day 2. TOURS/ CHENONCEAU/ AMBOISE/ CHAMBORD/ PARIS
CHENONCEAU CASTLE This Renaissance style castle was built by Thomas Bohier between 1513 and 1521; he was the treasurer of Charles VII, Louis XII and Francois I. It has been enlarged and decorated by each woman who lived there: Catherine Briçonnet; wife of the first owner, Diane de Poitiers; mistress of Henri II, Catherine de Medici; Henri II's wife, Louise de Lorraine; Henri III's wife, Madame Dupin; and Madame Pelouze.
AMBOISE. In 1516, François I invited Leonardo da Vinci to settle down in Clos Luce until his death in May 2nd, 1519.
The CLOS LUCE This manor-house belonged to Charles VIII, François I, Margarita of Navarre and Louise of Savoy. There, you will see the works of da Vinci and his bedroom where he died, the oratory built by Charles VIII, the dining room and the kitchen with a huge fireplace.
CHAMBORD CASTLE. This castle is the biggest and the most extravagant of the Loire Castles. It's a wonder of the Renaissance with 440 rooms, 365 fireplaces, 13 principal staircases and 70 secondaries. A unit of architecture and an elegant decoration with the 3 principal wonders: the tower terraces, the halls in cross forms and the grand staircase.
PARIS. Arrival at the end of the day.
